About SVP Productions/Joel Zemel

I began SVP Productions with the desire to promote and interesting film, musical and historical projects. This was accomplished to some degree with my first project, "Walter Borden Reads Sonnets by William Shakespeare". In the last few years, The scope of SVP Productions has broadened.

In 2009, I worked on a project and posted pages on the analysis of two photographs of the blast cloud from the 1917 Halifax Explosion. The research was carried out over a period of three and a half months with the assistance of Pierre Richard. For those also interested in the broader history of this event, our pages are filled with links to valuable resources of information and photographs.

In 2008, I posted an information page on James Barry, a 19th Century fiddler/printer from Six Mile Brook in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

For jazz guitar players and fans, I have pages entitled Jazz Guitar Information and Resources, containing information about great jazz guitarists, past and present, as well as pdf downloads, recommended listening and links.

I have posted web pages devoted to the great pioneer filmmaker, Nell Shipman and her husband, entrepreneur and film producer, Ernest Shipman. At one time, I had planned to do a documentary on Nell's life story but unfortunately, the project did not get past the research stage. These pages may help get the word out about her amazing life and contributions.

Joel Zemel has worked for many years as a musician playing concerts, theatre, television and performing in various bands. He has been involved in several recording projects as both a player and producer and is a versatile guitarist with strong jazz influences.

He was involved in many facets of filmmaking especially picture and sound editing. He has produced and directed two documentaries, "My Doctor's Family" and "Sonja". In 2008, he wrote a novel about the life of James Barry, "A Fiddler's Refrain".

He is currently writing a book on the 1917 Halifax Explosion.
